Crepe back satin has a luxurious hand and drapes beautifully in deep, heavy folds. Although similar to 4-ply silk in weight and beauty, the face of the fabric is shiny like charmeuse, while the back has a matte and textured finish. As its name implies, it’s made from a crimped crepe yarn. It is often used for special occasion garments, sometimes using both the face and back of the fabric to create an interesting textural change. However, don’t pigeon-hole it for dressy garments; in my experience, it makes lovely blouses and skirts, and it’s one of my favorite fabrics for coat linings. Dry clean; or consider hand washing if you don’t mind losing some of the shine and having the fibers slightly draw up (I recommend test washing a swatch first).
