Drafting Supplies:

It is important to replace plastic rulers periodically since they become knicked with regular use.

Design Ruler

Transparent, curved, plastic ruler, inflexible, marked to 26".

This design ruler is an essential tool for pattern drafting. It has the most beautiful curves of any ruler out there, is great for blending seam lines, and is clear so that you can see through to the marks on your pattern.

Vary Form Ruler

This curved ruler is an excellent additional tool for pattern drafting. It has very nice curves that are slightly different from the design ruler above and is great for blending seam lines. It is clear so that you can see through to the marks on your pattern.

6" C-Thru Ruler (SV-NTN-402)
18" C-Thru Ruler

Transparent, plastic, straight rulers, 6" or 18" long.

These straight rulers are excellent for precise drafting and adding seam allowances. The grid is in increments of 1/8", which is handy for most patternmaking, and there are smaller 1/16" increments along the edge. You can easily see through the transparent plastic to your pattern markings.

Drafting Paper

Translucent drafting paper, 21" x 225' roll.

This drafting paper is sturdy enough that it will withstand considerable marking and erasing while you draft patterns, yet it is still thin enough that you can easily see through it to markings below if you are copying or tracing a pattern. If you draft patterns occasionally, one roll may hold you for several years. If you draft patterns very frequently, you may go through a couple rolls each year.

Scissors:

After testing lots of small scissors over the years, I'm happy to offer the two types of thread snips that I can't live without!

Having your Famoré scissors sharpened and reconditioned is easy and inexpensive. The service is free, and there is just a small fee for the return shipping. Sending multiple pairs of scissors at once lowers the return shipping fee.

Famoré 3.5" Embroidery/Sewing Scissors Straight

My favorite scissors when I'm fitting, because the blades are thin and super sharp, which makes it easy to clip and release stitches. And they fit in the palm of my hand so I can continue to pin and conduct the fitting. The scissors are also great for clipping threads while sewing at the machine. Note: To keep these scissors in pristine shape for snipping threads, I recommend that you do not use them for cutting fabric.

Famoré 4" Large Ring Micro Tip Scissors Straight

I keep these by my machine when I'm sewing for clipping threads, and the micro tip is exceptionally good when you need to take out a sewn seam. These are sturdier scissors than the 3.5" ones, and slightly larger. I also like the micro tip for certain cutting jobs, like starting to cut a buttonhole open and clipping into corners.

Japanese Sewing Needles

Steel needles:
#7 Long: fine shaft, 1-1/2"
#9 Long: very fine shaft, 1-3/8"
#9 Short: very fine shaft, 1-1/8"
(Click thumbnail to see all needles.)

These hand-sewing needles are made of beautifully honed steel. They have very sharp points, never have burs, and are very fine, so as not to leave any holes in your fabric. Because the eyes are very small, it is helpful to freshly cut your thread on an angle in order to pass it through the eye. Most people prefer the #7 or #9 long needles as they are easier to handle (the #7 needle is slightly larger in diameter than the #9 needle). Some people find the #9 short needle hard to hold onto, yet it can be excellent for beading or stitching in a very small area.

Chakoner (Chalker)

Plastic chalking wheel. Comes in white, blue, red, yellow.

These chalkers use a wheel to lay down a precise, very fine line of powdered chalk. You'll love how the wheel glides effortlessly across the fabric with virtually no downward pressure. Since you only handle plastic, it keeps your hands clean. The top has a plastic brush eraser that is effective for removing markings on most fabrics. Refillable.

Hera Edo

Bone fabric-marking tool.

This beautifully crafted tool provides a different way to make markings on fabric. Simply hold the handle, and run the narrow edge along the fabric's surface with a slight to moderate amount of pressure, and you will see a scored line in the fabric. Since this line is permanent, I recommend that you experiment on a scrap piece of fabric to determine how much pressure you want to use, and mark your intended line(s) with accuracy and care. With many fabrics, you can mark two layers at one time.

The name originates in Japan. A "hera" was a spatula-shaped tool used in Japanese sword making, and lots of Samurai swords were made during the Edo period.

Silk Basting Thread

Comes in white only, 80 meters.

This thread is excellent for temporary basting, as it is very fine and slippery and thus easy to pull out. Especially when used with the Japanese Sewing Needles, there will be no markings or holes left behind in your fabric.

Translucent Plastic Snaps

Translucent plastic, small (7/16") or medium (9/16").

Snaps are an excellent closure method. I often use them in jackets where I do not want to have buttons, or beneath buttons if I am using fabric that would be difficult to put a buttonhole into. You can take a look at my jacket gallery for examples.

Covered Snaps

Matte fabric snap, 21 mm in diameter. Comes in black, brown, navy, gray, purple.

Snaps are an excellent closure method. I often use them in jackets where I do not want to have buttons, or beneath buttons if I am using fabric that would be difficult to put a buttonhole into. You can take a look at my jacket gallery for examples.

These snaps are easy to sew on. The under side is plain metal with fairly large holes that I "feel around" for with my needle. I use a double strand of thread, passing through each hole about 3 times. It works best to knot the thread after each pass around the hole by going through the thread loop that forms. I use 4 holes unless I am making a coat, in which case I use more.

Chain

Comes in gunmetal (thick and medium), gold (medium and small), silver (medium, flat and small).

Sold by the inch (add to cart and edit length in inches inside the cart in the "quantity" column).

Chain is most often used in french-style jackets to add weight, so that the hem hangs nicely. Traditionally it is used only in the back to counterweight the ornamentation on the front of the jacket. Today people often put chain all the way around for added flash-factor.
